More than 200 people with disabilities marched along with their advocates from Philadelphia to Washington, D.C., from September 4-17. The protesters traveled the 144 miles to demand support for legislation to liberate disabled and older people from nursing homes by providing in-home support services. Marchers want Congress to pass the Medicaid Community Attendant Services and Supports Act, which requires Medicaid to pay for such aid. The bill was first introduced in 1997 by Representative Newt Gingrich.
