Wheelchairs Stymied at Probation Office

Five disabled persons who were put on court-supervised probation for their role in a March demonstration at the U.S. Capitol to protest a lack of wheelchair access to public facilities received a shock when they showed up at the District of Columbia’s probation offices: The building had no wheelchair ramps at any of its four entrances.

Rather than stage another protest, they have sued. Along with American Disabled for Accessible Public Transportation, which staged the protest, the five seek $100,000 in damages apiece from the District of Columbia for failing to provide access to the handicapped.

The five were among 104 persons who were arrested for demonstrating on federal property, a local offense. When they arrived at the building to which they had been referred for probation, they could not get in and were later referred to a building next door that had a ramp.
